How to Change Android Fonts
There are several ways to change the font style on Android but the method you use will depend on what brand of mobile or tablet you have. If you have a Samsung or LG device , many models of this brand come with a choice of fonts and options in Settings to change the font style.
If you have a different brand of mobile or tablet, such as Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, LG, or others, you can still change your font style with a little help from the launcher application.
Change Font Style on Samsung
Samsung has the most powerful font options that have been previously installed. Samsung has a built-in application called FlipFont that is pre-loaded with a number of font options. To change your font on most Samsung models, you go to Settings > Display > Font Style and select the font you want to use.
On newer models, such as the Galaxy S8, font options are found in slightly different places. In these newer models, the most common ways to change your font are Settings > Display > Zoom screen and font > Font Style and select the font you like and tap Apply .
Adding More Font Options to Your Samsung
Additional font styles are also available for download from Google Play . Extra font styles released by Monotype for download, the company behind the FlipFont application, generally has a cost per font.
There are also a number of downloads of free fonts designed by independent developers to use with the FlipFont application that is listed on Google Play , however, many of these no longer function after the changes Samsung applied to most of their models along with the updated Marshmallow Android version . The most frequently cited reason for this third-party letter package block is copyright.
Samsung Galaxy devices can also download fonts from the Samsung Apps Store Galaxy.
Change Font Style on LG
Many LG phones and tablets come with the ability to change your font pre-installed. Here’s how to do it for most LG models:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Then scroll down to the Font type to choose from the available fonts.
- When you find what you want to use, tap to activate the font.
Adding More Fonts to Your LG
Additional fonts are available for download through the LG SmartWorld application . To download the application from the LG website, you must change the security settings to allow downloading applications from “unknown sources”, which means from other places besides Google Play. To do this:
- Open Settings then tap Security .
- Check the box for Unknown Sources .
- A warning window will appear to notify you that this option can make your device vulnerable.
- Click OK and close the settings.
After you download the application and whatever font you want, you can change the security settings again by following the same path and only unchecking the Unknown Source box.
Change Font Style on Other Android Phones
For most other Android phone brands that are not Samsung or LG, the simplest and safest way to change the font style is to use the launch application. Although there is one other way, it is far more complex and requires changing files in the operating system directory. This also requires that you download an application that will “hack” your device, or give you access to protected operating system files.
In most cases, rooting your cellphone or tablet will void the warranty on the device and can cause other problems with the way the device works.
The main difference when using the launch application compared to the pre-loaded font features, such as the LG and Samsung font features, is that the labels and main menu will have the new font you choose, but usually won’t work in different applications, such as text messaging applications. And not all launch applications give you the option to change only the font style. Some require downloading theme packages to work with launchers to access fonts and you may have to apply all themes to make changes.
We will discuss two available applications that allow font changes without having to apply the entire theme. Keep in mind that some applications function differently depending on the brand of cellphone or tablet that you have and application developers do updates from time to time that can change or limit features.
The Android Launcher application becomes the default main screen
The launcher application must take over as your default home screen to display your font changes consistently. When you first open the launcher application, your phone or tablet you should ask that you choose whether to use it for your home screen once or always . Select Always so that the launcher works correctly.
You can also change this by going to Settings > Devices > Home and then choosing the launcher application that you are using.
Change the Font Style with Apex Launcher
Apex Launcher is available on Google Play . After you download and install the Apex Launcher application, it will automatically add two icons to your home screen: Menu Apex and Apex Settings .
To change your font:
- Click Apex Settings.
- Then select Advanced Settings.
- From that menu select Settings Icons and then Font Icons .
- Screen Font icon displays a list of available fonts. Select the font you like and automatically update the icon label on your mobile.
Unfortunately, this won’t change the font in other applications but provides a new home screen and application menu.
Examples of Apex Launcher fonts
For examples using Apex Launcher, select a new font from the list and see how it looks.
Select Dancing Script as a new font and then open the application menu to see it applied.
Change Style Fonts with GO Launcher Z
The GO Launcher Z can also help you change your font style, but the same limitations apply as with other launcher applications. If you are familiar with the launcher application, you might have heard about GO Launcher EX , which was an earlier version of GO Launcher. There are still several themes and language packages that are supported for the EX version on Google Play.
After downloading and opening the application, slide your finger up on the home screen so that the GO Launcher menu icon appears. Then:
- Click the icon with the spanner named GO Settings , which will open the Preferences menu .
- Once on the Preferences menu , tap Font.
- Then select Select Font . This will bring up the available font window.
Scan Fonts Available with GO Launcher Z
Before you choose a font, first tap on Scan Font in the lower right corner of the font window. The application will then scan any package of fonts that already exist on your mobile as part of the system file, or even another application. For example, on our Droid Turbo, he found some interesting fonts in other applications that we call INKredible .
After the application has finished scanning your cellphone and other applications for fonts, you can scroll and select the font you like by tapping the circle next to it. The new font is automatically applied to the labels and icons on your phone.
You might see several duplicates in the font list of different applications because many applications use the same standard font set.
Go Z Launcher Font Example
For an example of using GO Launcher Z, select a new font from the list and see how it looks.
We have chosen Luminari as our new and open font. The image shows how it looks in the application manager menu.
Note About GO Launcher Z
The only problem encountered in our testing GO Launcher Z is the black dock bar along the bottom of the home screen and the application menu screen that blocks some of the screen and doesn’t disappear even after choosing to hide the dock in application settings.
The most common reason for this continuous black dock bar is that application developers have missed updates or haven’t updated programming to the latest Google version / Android release version. The launcher application fails to recognize the existing button or icon for the application menu screen and insert one.
This is most common after updates to the Android operating system are released to the public, but this problem is usually resolved through bug fixes in future application updates.
